Cinema and research come together: Unife launches the film festival "Science on Film"
February 11, 2026
Cinema as a tool for communicating research and engaging with society. This is the idea behind the new film festival “Science on Film. A cinematic experience through the knowledge of Unife” (Science on Film: A Cinematic Journey through the Knowledge of Unife), promoted by the University of Ferrara, which will be held from 13 January to 14 April, every Tuesday at 6 p.m., at the Notorious Cinemas in Ferrara.
The festival features 13 screenings, each curated by a university department, to showcase the diverse areas of university research through the immediate and engaging language of cinema.
The Ferrara Technopole, a place of integration between the University, businesses, institutions and citizens, contributes to enhancing the initiative as a space for connection between scientific knowledge and society. In this context, “Science on Film” is a concrete example of how research can move beyond traditional academic contexts and become an opportunity for public discussion that is accessible and participatory.
Each event includes a scientific introduction by the Head of Department and/or scientific representative, followed by the screening of the film and a final debate open to the public. Teachers and researchers accompany the viewing with interpretations that link the film content to the research activities carried out in the University's laboratories and research centres, some of which are also affiliated with the Technopole laboratories.
The programme covers a wide range of disciplines: from life sciences to medicine, from environmental emergencies to engineering, from architecture to physics and space sciences, to economics, law and the humanities. Themes such as sustainability, health, technology, ethics, innovation and the future of humanity become the subject of shared consideration, in line with the Technopole's mission to promote a culture of conscious and inclusive innovation.
The initiative is organized by the Unife Technology Transfer Office, in collaboration with the Press Office, Institutional and Digital Communication, the E-learning and Multimedia Services Office, and the University Departments, reinforcing the role of the Ferrara Technopole as a bridge between academic research, the production system, and the local community.
