The workshop "ECO CONCRETE - New sustainable concretes: regulatory developments, performance and durability" will be held on September 22th 2026, starting at 2:30 PM in Room 4 of the University of Ferrara's Science and Technology Center (Via Saragat, 1).

The event, organized in collaboration with the Technopole of Ferrara and the Order of Engineers of the Province of Ferrara, is the final workshop of the CASA project (Circular and Sustainable Concretes Added with Recycled Materials from Local Supply Chains). The project is supported by funding from the Emilia-Romagna Region's PR ERDF.

The CASA project studied the technological and industrial potential associated with recovering process/product waste in construction materials. Its objectives were to enhance circularity in waste management, taking into account environmental and social impacts, technical feasibility and economic viability. It also aimed to reduce the consumption of virgin raw materials and CO2 emissions, explore the possibility of using waste for fiber production or as a substitute for aggregates/cement in concrete. It also raised awareness of extended producer responsibility for waste management systems, developed transition processes toward more sustainable systems and contributed to the achievement of SDGs 9, 11, 12 and 13 of the 2030 Agenda.

The project was characterized by a multidisciplinary approach to the complex problem of using technologically poor waste materials in materials that must guarantee adequate levels of performance, safety and durability, while remaining within the scope of technological feasibility and economic viability. To this end, multisectoral expertise, adequate equipment and laboratories, human and material resources, and effective interactions with the industrial world are essential.

CASA's cross-disciplinary approach was made possible thanks to the multidisciplinary nature of the various regional research laboratories involved and the complementary, cutting-edge equipment available. The partnership combines expertise in Materials Engineering (CIDEA, CRICT), Construction Science and Technology (CIDEA, CRICT, En&Tech, CIRI EC), Environmental Sustainability (CIDEA, CIRI EC), Durability (TekneHub) and Environmental Impact Assessment (En&Tech).

The TekneHub laboratory at the Technopole of Ferrara focused on studying the durability of these new materials, focusing in particular on their ability to protect reinforcing bars from corrosion.

The seminar will explore issues related to the use of green materials in construction, technological innovations, and recent developments in industry regulations.
