Inside the Lab:
A day discovering applied research at the Terra&Acqua Tech Laboratory

On April 28, fifteen University of Ferrara students and researchers visited the Terra&Acqua Tech Laboratory.
Organized by the Technopole of Ferrara in synergy with ART-ER’s Hub Talenti and ER.GO, the initiative transformed a study morning into an immersive experience at the heart of regional innovation.
The morning began in the Levi Lecture Hall in Via Borsari, where Angela Princi, Manager of the Technopole of Ferrara, highlighted the strategic role of the Technopole—a place where the demand for innovation meets the solutions offered by industrial research, experimental development, technology transfer, and specialized services.
Prof. Luisa Pasti, Scientific Director of the Terra&Acqua Tech laboratory, presented the laboratory's eight research units. Accredited by the High Technology Network of the Emilia-Romagna region, the lab brings together expertise in chemistry, physics, and biology to tackle sustainability challenges: from biorefining for waste upcycling to smart water cycle management.
A clear call to action also came from Maria Giovanna Govoni (ART-ER) and Omar Paolucci (ER.GO): "Give voice to your curiosity." An invitation to leverage regional services to turn their academic journey into a high-impact career.
The core of the event was the guided tour, which began in the Quality and Sustainability of Natural Resources and Agro-Food Valorization laboratories in Via Borsari, where science meets everyday life. Participants discovered, for instance, how collaboration with a major coffee machine manufacturer relies on advanced spectrophotometry and chromatography techniques to guarantee the total purity of compounds.
The flame photometer generated great fascination: a particularly visually striking instrument where nebulized solutions color the flame according to the elements present, quite literally making "the invisible visible."
Thanks to a dedicated shuttle service, the tour continued at the Scientific and Technological Pole in Via Saragat, where the doors of the Environmental Sensing and Sedimentology & Geochemistry laboratories were opened.
Participants watched video footage of the RadGyro in action—an autogyro equipped with gamma sensors to monitor environmental radioactivity—and got hands-on experience with drones capable of mapping terrain with surgical precision. Using multispectral cameras, these technologies are applied to precision agriculture, where researchers can, among other things, "read" plant health and detect early-stage diseases that significantly impact production—such as flavescence dorée in grapevines—even before they become visible to the naked eye.
From the sedimentology lab—vital for industries such as ceramics and pharmaceuticals—the tour moved on to sensor physics. Here, research reaches peaks of excellence with the development of devices capable of monitoring cellular metabolism to prevent and understand tumor pathologies.
What struck participants most was not just the technology itself, but the common thread linking the laboratories: far from operating as isolated silos, experts from diverse fields collaborate within an environment designed to solve real-world global challenges.
The event raised participants' awareness of the vital role teamwork plays in driving concrete, innovative solutions. For those present, "Inside the Lab" marked a first step toward their potential professional future—one built on collaboration and team spirit.
